Arnaud Renouf was invited at the belgian society of pathology last saturday for a workshop on digital cytology and Ai.
He talked about slide scanners, AI and their application to cervical cytology. Participants could understand how digital cytology and AI can bring better accuracy while going faster in the diagnosis.
Takeaway for the participants:
Digital Cytology is not only about scanners as AI solutions need standardized and controlled processes, regulation approval and IT infrastructure. Do not decide for a scanner without making sure that its specification suit your needs (for Cytology, Histology or both? Are there available AI solutions for the domain you want to cover ?).
It is also important to check robustness of the scanners (some can be unstable) and to decide as far as the AI solution is concerned whether you would like to do remote diagnosis and work from anywhere with a standard screen at limited cost (as specific workstation might cost a lot) and to verify that a native LIS integration is available within the AI solution (important to optimize productivity gains and user experience).
